Understanding Tinnitus

Understanding Tinnitus: This module examines the condition that is tinnitus. It provides essential learning for health professionals, as it can impact individuals of all ages and health statuses.  In fact, health professionals may be the first point of contact for many people with tinnitus.

You, as a health professional, may feel that in your role, there aren’t many actions you can take in treating tinnitus. Due to the large nature of this topic, you may feel overwhelmed when patients ask you about it. You may not know where to start. But with an understanding of the key elements of tinnitus, you can be of great help to your patients.

Recognising and understanding tinnitus and its impact on one’s life is crucial in supporting tinnitus patients and giving them hope. Support is often essential for managing this condition, but unfortunately, many individuals with tinnitus do not receive the help they require.

The module will equip health professionals with the knowledge to understand the many causes of tinnitus, through examination of the physiology underlying this condition. The complexity of tinnitus means that this module cannot cover every cause or aspect of the condition. This module aims to equip health professionals with a solid understanding of tinnitus to better support their patients.

We recommend completing “The Ear: Anatomy and Physiology” course first to ensure a basic understanding of the ear. A brief anatomy overview is also provided at the beginning of this course.
